This is despite the fact that they turned down the institution’s management’s request to extend the payment deadline by three weeks. The University of Ibadan’s (UI) student body has vowed to keep protesting the university administration’s recent fee increase. This is despite the fact that they turned down the institution’s management’s request to extend the payment deadline by three weeks.

SaharaReporters previously reported that the student body reacted negatively to the fees rise, which went from N230,000 to N412,000. In addition, the students threatened to shut down the school if their requests for the fees to be reversed were not met. Recall that the ruling council stated that the country’s current economic conditions made the increase inevitable.

To cover the increased tuition, they suggested that students take out loans. This is despite the fact that the deadline for paying school fees was set for September 5. The Students’ Union disputed the ruling by the governing council in a statement dated August 30, 2024, written by Aweda Bolaji, the union president, and distributed through Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth, the general secretary. Part of it says, The students decided that: “We reject the decision made by the governing council,” during the demonstration that took place on August 29, 2024, from 10:20 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. A “total boycott of classes till our demands are fulfilled” was demanded by the students.

“The students demand a reversal of the school fees,” the statement reads. The students want the school tuition portal to be taken offline in a day so that we may get our demands fulfilled. “The demonstration that got underway on August 29th won’t end until our demands are met.

The hashtags #UIFEESMUSTFALL and #SAVEUITES must be used, and students are urged to utilize social media to the fullest. Following student initiatives, a new Congress was convened, and as a result, the September 5 deadline for payment was extended by three weeks.

The vice-chancellor, professor Kayode Omobowale, and other major officers met with representatives of the students, including Aweda Bolaji, president of the student union, and other student leaders, before deciding to grant the extension. The students, however, disapproved of the meeting’s outcome and vowed to continue their protest, saying that they still wanted the fees reversed rather than the deadline extended.
