Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said he would seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if he believes anything goes wrong during the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
The singer made the statement while speaking during a live session with comedian Carter Efe, as political activities intensify ahead of the election.
Davido, whose uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking re-election, has been actively involved in the governor’s campaign and has repeatedly called for a peaceful, free and credible electoral process.
Speaking on the forthcoming poll, the singer warned that he would not remain silent if the election was allegedly compromised.
“I will involve Trump if anything goes wrong in the Osun election,” Davido said.
The singer also indicated that he would seek to draw international attention to any alleged irregularities surrounding the electoral process.
DAVIDO RAISES CONCERNS OVER ALLEGED POLITICAL INTERFERENCE
Davido had earlier raised concerns over claims that an unnamed politician from Imo State was planning to interfere in the Osun election.
Although he did not identify the politician, the singer appealed to the individual to allow the election to take place peacefully and transparently.
Davido alleged that the unnamed politician intended to use the election as an opportunity to demonstrate political influence in the state.
The singer is currently serving as the head of the youth mobilisation team for Governor Adeleke’s re-election campaign.
UZODIMMA’S AIDE RESPONDS
The comments have drawn a response from Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, Senior Special Assistant to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma on Electronic and Creative Media.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Nwaogwugwu advised Davido to direct his appeal to the people of Osun State, who will ultimately determine the outcome of the election through their votes.
The governor’s aide described Davido’s comments as misplaced and argued that the singer’s family connection to Imo State did not provide sufficient grounds to direct such an appeal at Governor Uzodimma.
Nwaogwugwu also maintained that Uzodimma had consistently advocated for a peaceful, free and credible electoral process.
OSUN POLL UNDER HEIGHTENED ATTENTION
The August 15 governorship election has attracted significant political attention, with concerns over security, vote-buying, alleged political interference and the conduct of federal institutions featuring prominently in the build-up to the poll.
