The Nigerian Navy has arrested 13 suspects and intercepted two wooden boats allegedly used for the illegal transportation of mined black sand in Bayelsa State.

The operation formed part of ongoing efforts by the Navy to combat illegal exploitation of natural resources and strengthen security within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, who said the operation was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso.

According to him, the operation followed credible intelligence regarding the movement of boats suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities around coastal communities in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

Folorunsho explained that naval personnel intercepted the boats at Lekeson and Liama communities, where large quantities of suspected illegally mined black sand were discovered.

“A total of 13 crew members were arrested in connection with the activity,” he stated.

The naval officer noted that the successful interception reflects the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to protecting the nation’s maritime resources and preventing illegal exploitation activities that threaten economic development and environmental sustainability.

He stressed that illegal extraction of natural resources continues to pose serious risks to environmental balance and national economic interests.

The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in sustaining operations against illegal resource extraction and other maritime crimes while maintaining security and stability within the nation’s waterways,” Folorunsho stated.

He added that in line with existing procedures and directives issued by the Bayelsa State Government, the two seized wooden boats, recovered black sand and all 13 suspects had been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Nembe Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Folorunsho reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime assets and ensure that waterways remain secure for lawful economic activities.

He said the latest operation aligns with broader efforts to curb illegal mining, maritime crimes and other activities capable of undermining the sustainable management of Nigeria’s natural resources.
