Labour Party Inaugurates Screening Committee Ahead Of 2027 Elections
The Labour Party has constituted a National Screening Committee to supervise the screening of aspirants ahead of its nomination primaries for the 2027 General Elections.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, noting that the decision was made in line with relevant provisions of the Labour Party Constitution and the Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primaries.
According to the statement, the party’s National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, will serve as chairperson of the committee.
Other members of the panel include Oluchi Oparah, Mohammad Salisu, Martina Umana, Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke, and Olu Ayewoh, while Iheanacho Obioma will serve as secretary.
The statement was jointly signed by Nenadi Usman and the party’s National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma.
The committee is expected to oversee the screening of aspirants contesting for the party’s presidential, governorship, and National Assembly tickets ahead of the 2027 elections.
Its responsibilities include verifying the authenticity and completeness of documents submitted by aspirants, ensuring compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements, and recommending qualified candidates for the party primaries.
The committee is also mandated to conduct its activities in accordance with the Labour Party constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
The party urged members of the committee to carry out their duties with fairness, integrity, and commitment to the overall interest of the party as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
According to the party’s previously released timetable, submission of completed nomination forms and the commencement of screening exercises are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 18, 2026.
