17 Federal Lawmakers Defect From ADC To NDC As Political Realignment Deepens
A major political shift has occurred in Nigeria’s National Assembly as at least 17 members of the House of Representatives have officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development was announced during plenary on Tuesday when the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read out the formal notices of defection submitted by the affected lawmakers.
Among those who moved to the NDC are Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, Munachim Umezuruike, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The Speaker also announced a separate defection, noting that Leke Abejide has moved from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The wave of defections comes amid growing political restructuring within opposition ranks, particularly following recent movements involving prominent figures such as Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who were also linked to the NDC.
Meanwhile, Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, has suggested that internal imbalance within the ADC coalition contributed to Obi’s exit from the party. He stated that early signs indicated Obi would not secure the party’s presidential ticket.
The latest defections highlight increasing political realignments ahead of future elections, as parties continue to consolidate strength and reposition across the country.
