Projects in Ruins: Community Confronts Aiyedatiwa on World Bank
Residents of Yaba community in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State have petitioned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa over what they described as the abandonment of key infrastructure projects funded under the World Bank-backed Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).
In the petition, community members accused both the Ondo State Government and RAAMP officials of neglecting projects worth billions of naira, leaving critical infrastructure in a state of disrepair.
Among the affected projects are the Odode-Bajare Road, Ojota-Ala Road, and a World Bank-supported market located along the Yaba/Ojotu (Olofin-Ojota) axis.
According to residents, these projects were originally designed to boost rural connectivity, facilitate agricultural trade, and improve livelihoods in the area.
The petition, signed by the Araghaye of Idanre and Yaba community head, Fredrick Adegoke, alleged that construction work on the market project was halted following a dispute between contractors.
Community leaders expressed frustration over the deteriorating condition of the roads, noting that they have become largely impassable, severely affecting the movement of people and goods.
They added that the abandoned market project has dashed expectations for economic growth in the area.
Describing the situation as unacceptable, the petitioners warned that the neglect of a World Bank-supported initiative undermines public trust and negatively impacts thousands of residents.
“We call on the governor to personally inspect these projects, resolve the issues between contractors, and ensure that work resumes without delay,” the petition read.
The community also urged the state government to re-engage construction teams and establish a monitoring committee to ensure transparency and accountability in the execution of the projects.
They expressed hope that swift government intervention would revive the stalled developments and improve living conditions in the community.
