Major Crisis Looms in Delta NUJ as Warri Chapel Passes Vote of No Confidence on Chairman
The Warri Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has passed a vote of no confidence on the Chairman of the Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, over alleged violations of the union’s constitution ahead of the forthcoming council election.
The decision was reached during an emergency congress of the chapel, where members expressed concerns over actions they described as inconsistent with the provisions of the NUJ Constitution (2023 as amended). According to the chapel, the chairman allegedly removed some members from the voters’ register without following due constitutional procedures.
Members also criticised what they described as a lack of consultation and disregard for democratic processes within the council’s administration. They noted that concerns reportedly raised by the Acting State Secretary and other stakeholders were not given due consideration.
Following the deliberations, the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel called on the chairman to either step down from office or face possible impeachment proceedings for failing to uphold the constitutional provisions of the union.
The chapel further appealed to the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to intervene and ensure transparency in the electoral process. It also requested that members allegedly removed from the voters’ register be reinstated and that candidates earlier disqualified from the election be allowed to participate.
