The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, will be closed from March 2026 for extensive rehabilitation and expansion works.

According to FAAN, the closure will last for approximately 22 months as part of efforts to modernise infrastructure and improve passenger experience at one of Nigeria’s busiest international gateways.

During the rehabilitation period, international departures will be handled through a temporary terminal facility covering about 8,000 square metres. The temporary departure hall, which is nearing completion, will initially accommodate operations for between five and six international airlines.

FAAN advised passengers travelling through Lagos to arrive earlier than usual, as airlines will be relocating their operations to the temporary terminal.

International arrivals and cargo operations will, however, continue to operate from other existing sections of the airport to ensure minimal disruption to services.

The upgrade project will also feature the construction of a new skywalk linking Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, expansion of apron space to accommodate wide-body aircraft, and significant improvements to the airport road network.

FAAN said the project is aimed at increasing passenger handling capacity, enhancing safety, and bringing MMIA in line with global aviation standards, while ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience for passengers.
