President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has raised concern over the rising cost of food across Nigeria, warning that the country is facing a growing threat of hunger that requires urgent and coordinated national action.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during his welcome address at the first sitting of the Senate after the Christmas and New Year recess, describing the situation as a serious challenge to national stability and citizens’ welfare.

Citing a recent projection by the United Nations, the Senate President disclosed that as many as 35 million Nigerians could face hunger this year, describing the development as a national emergency.

He noted that the surge in food prices has placed enormous pressure on households, particularly vulnerable populations, stressing that food insecurity must now take priority in national policy discussions.

According to him, the Senate will intensify efforts to enact laws and policies that promote agricultural productivity, stabilise food supply chains, and reduce the impact of inflation on ordinary Nigerians.

Akpabio also commended the continued military collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in the fight against terrorism, describing the partnership as vital to strengthening the country’s security architecture.

He extended condolences to families affected by insecurity nationwide, describing the loss of lives and displacement of communities as painful realities that must not be ignored.

The Senate President further called for sustained prayers and collective commitment toward securing the release of Nigerians still held in captivity, describing their plight as a national wound.

While welcoming lawmakers back from recess, Akpabio noted that the Senate resumed under a sombre mood following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District. The chamber observed a minute of silence in his honour.

Reflecting on the country’s current challenges, Akpabio said Nigerians continue to endure economic hardship and insecurity but remain resilient and hopeful.

With political activities gradually intensifying, he cautioned political actors to exercise restraint, warning that national unity and stability must never be sacrificed for personal ambition.

Turning to the legislature’s agenda, Akpabio said the Tenth Senate has entered a decisive phase of its tenure and urged lawmakers to focus on passing people-centred laws that promote economic growth, strengthen institutions and restore public confidence.

He assured Nigerians that the Senate would give prompt attention to the 2026 budget, promising thorough scrutiny and responsible passage in collaboration with the Executive.
