At least five people were confirmed dead, while two others sustained injuries in a fatal accident that occurred at Ilu-Abo, along the Akure–Owo road in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
According to eyewitnesses, the crash happened at Oyin Junction and involved a Nissan Sunny car and a DAF tipper truck.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, said seven people were involved in the collision — five died instantly, including one man, three women, and a young girl, while two others sustained injuries.
Ibitoye attributed the tragic accident to over-speeding, warning motorists to practice defensive driving, especially during the busy ember months when traffic is usually heavier.
“The remains of the deceased have been taken to the morgue at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, while the injured victims are receiving treatment,” he stated.
The FRSC boss added that the Corps had intensified public sensitisation among tipper drivers and other motorists on safe driving habits and proper vehicle maintenance to reduce crashes.
“This kind of incident is becoming too frequent. Drivers must ensure their vehicles are in good condition and avoid recklessness on the road,” he said.
He also urged road users to remain vigilant and to steer clear of careless drivers to avoid preventable tragedies.
“As traffic increases during the ember months, everyone must be cautious, obey traffic laws, and drive responsibly,” Ibitoye advised.
