The Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom has ordered the closure of all markets, stalls, and shops in the city today, Thursday, August 14, 2025, in observance of the annual Aheregbe Festival.
According to a statement by Adeyeye Michael, Chief Press Secretary to the monarch, the shutdown is part of a long-standing tradition tied to the festival, which holds deep cultural importance for the kingdom.
The order bans all commercial activities for the day, urging residents, traders, and shop owners to comply fully to ensure a smooth celebration. However, pharmacies and patent medicine stores are exempt due to the essential nature of their services.
The palace assured that the festival would not affect human or vehicular movement, adding that activities outside the closed commercial areas would go on as usual.
Regarded as one of Akure’s most notable cultural events, the Aheregbe Festival draws participants from within and outside the city. The palace encouraged the public to honour the tradition and contribute to the successful hosting of the celebration.
