On Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, the Super Falcons pulled off a remarkable turnaround, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and capture the 2024 championship title.
Morocco initially went ahead when top scorer Ghizlane Chebbak struck in the 12th minute, followed by Sanaâ Mssoudy’s goal in the 24th. However, Nigeria mounted a determined response in the second half.
President Tinubu, impressed by the team’s resilience, joined them on a video call to offer his congratulations.
“As a team, you have made us all proud. The entire nation celebrates you. Your performance has lifted our spirits,” he said. “Achieving a record 10th title is a remarkable accomplishment for Nigeria and for Africa as a whole. Congratulations to the players, coaches, management, and officials. Have a safe trip home, enjoy your victory, and take care to avoid injuries.”
Tinubu specifically applauded Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named both the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament, as well as Esther Okoronkwo for her composed penalty in the 64th minute, which initiated Nigeria’s comeback.
Okoronkwo also set up the second goal and delivered the free-kick that Jennifer Echegini converted for the match-winner.
“Safe travels, celebrate well, and stay injury-free. God bless you,” the President told the jubilant squad, who repeatedly responded with, “Thank you, Mr. President!”
Ajibade, speaking for the team, expressed gratitude to Tinubu for ensuring their allowances were fully paid and promised they looked forward to presenting the WAFCON trophy to him in Abuja.
The interaction ended with the players singing the national anthem and giving three loud “Gbosa!” cheers in his honor.
