In a powerful demonstration of unity, heritage, and youth empowerment, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) lits up the 2025 Boro Day celebrations with an electrifying friendly football match against the Bayelsa State’s All Stars. The thrilling encounter, which drew a massive crowd of spectators and stakeholders, served as both a tribute to the legendary freedom fighter Isaac Adaka Boro and a rallying point for the Ijaw nation’s unwavering spirit.

The symbolic match took center stage as part of this year’s commemorative activities, reflecting the IYC’s commitment to fostering camaraderie, peace, and socio-cultural awareness among Ijaw youths through sports. The Bayelsa State All Stars, a squad of seasoned ex-professional footballers and respected figures, matched skills and strategy against the energetic, determined IYC team in a contest that was as fierce as it was festive.

IYC President, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri, in his remarks, hailed the event as more than just a game, calling it a celebration of Ijaw resilience, solidarity, identity and the struggle’s continuity  “This match embodies the very ideals Boro stood for—courage, unity, and the pursuit of justice for our people. Today, we play not just to win, but to honor his legacy and remind our youth of the strength we possess when we come together.”

The match saw moments of brilliance from both sides, with dazzling footwork, solid teamwork, and spirited cheers from the crowd. Though played in a friendly spirit, the contest was fiercely competitive, echoing the fiery passion of the Ijaw struggle Boro once led.

As the final whistle blew, the real victory was evident—not in the scores—but in the loud, unbreakable message of unity and pride sent across the Ijaw nation. The IYC has once again proven that sport is a powerful tool for mobilization, healing, and the reinforcement of a shared cultural legacy.

Boro Day 2025 will be remembered not only for its speeches and tributes but for the day the pitch became a battlefield of brotherhood, passion, and purpose.
