A fire outbreak erupted on Tuesday night at Otedola Bridge in Lagos State after a 50,000-litre gasoline tanker overturned while making a turn. The incident, which occurred around 8:18 p.m., triggered an explosion. However, as of press time, no casualties have been confirmed.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), swiftly arrived at the scene to contain the fire and manage traffic disruptions.

Speaking with Arogbo-Ibe Voice Reporters, the Director General of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that a coordinated emergency response was activated to control the situation.

“All hands are on deck to extinguish the flames. Motorists are advised to take alternative routes where possible,” he said.

He further explained, “Efforts are ongoing to contain the fire. The vehicle, carrying flammable material, overturned, leading to the explosion. However, operations are still in progress to ensure full containment.”

This latest incident draws parallels to the devastating tanker explosion on June 28, 2018, at the same location. During that tragedy, a fuel-laden tanker lost control due to brake failure, overturning and spilling its contents. The resulting inferno claimed at least 12 lives, left several injured, and destroyed approximately 54 vehicles.

The 2018 Otedola Bridge explosion underscored the urgent need for stricter regulations regarding the movement of fuel tankers. It sparked widespread calls for enhanced road safety measures to prevent similar disasters.

Authorities continue their investigation into Tuesday’s explosion, emphasizing the importance of caution among motorists and fuel tanker operators. LASEMA and other emergency agencies remain on high alert to mitigate risks and prevent further incidents.
