A powerful voice has emerged from Warri Federal Constituency, issuing a searing indictment of decades of political failure and calling for urgent transformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

In a strongly worded intervention, made available to our newsroom, legal practitioner and environmental justice advocate, Godday Omosehin Gbedi (Esq) warns that the people of Warri stand at a decisive historical moment:

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections… will the next electoral cycle bring meaningful change, or will it reinforce the cycle of neglect that has persisted for 27 years in Warri Federal Constituency?”

Despite its vast petroleum wealth, the Warri FederalConstituency in Delta State, is portrayed as a symbol of contradiction.

Instead of translating our vast petroleum wealth into prosperity, it has resulted in poverty, pollution, and widespread hardship.” he lamented.

Barrister Omosehin, highlighted glaring infrastructural decay, singling out the long-troubled Warri–Effurun Road: “The much-publicised Warri–Effurun Road project… remains in a deplorable state, posing a constant danger to commuters and stifling economic activity.” Electricity shortages and industrial stagnation further compound the crisis:
Electric power supply remains grossly inadequate… severely limiting the ability of local industries to thrive and discouraging potential investors.”

One of the most alarming revelations is the scale of youth unemployment across the Warri geographical entity.

Up to 60 percent of young people in Delta State are without meaningful employment… contributing to rising insecurity, including cultism and violent conflicts.” Barrister Godday added.
This paints a troubling picture of a region sitting on a demographic time bomb. The article raises serious concerns about accountability in public spending:
Annual allocations running into hundreds of millions of naira have failed to produce visible or impactful projects.”
There are no widely recognised skill acquisition centres or sustainable youth empowerment initiatives that reflect these expenditures.”

The legal practitioner’s intervention draws urgent attention to environmental injustice in oil-producing communities of Warri axis
Oil exploration activities… have resulted in over a thousand recorded oil spill incidents since 1999.”

Communities such as Gbaramatu and Ogbe-Ijaw are cited as heavily impacted by oil exploitation.
These spills have devastated farmlands and polluted water bodies, effectively destroying traditional livelihoods.” He stressed.

Accordingly, the health consequences are equally hazardous to the inhabitants: “Gas flaring has exposed residents to harmful emissions, leading to widespread respiratory illnesses and long-term health complications.”

At the heart of the crisis is what the he describes as systemic leadership failure.
The underdevelopment of Warri is not incidental, it is the direct consequence of poor leadership and ineffective representation.”

The advocate outlines clear benchmarks for evaluating political representatives, including legislative performance, grassroots engagement, and tangible development outcomes, standards he argues have largely not been met.

The statement similarly criticizes entrenched political practices. “Godfatherism, manipulated primaries, and vote-buying have further entrenched mediocrity and weakened democratic accountability.”

Adding that weak representation at the national level has diminished Warri’s ability to attract federal projects and funding. In his philosophy, the 2027 elections as a turning point: “The time has come to demand better. The time has come to act”, calling on traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders across Itsekiri, Urhobo, and Ijaw ethnic nationalities to unite for transformation.

Notably, the human right activist throws support behind a specific political figure, the national leader of the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC) in Egbema Kingdom, Warri North LGA, High Chief Promise Lawuru, whose magnanimity has positively affected many lives within and outside the Federal Constituency.

Stakeholders support and vote for High Chief Promise Lawuru… a candidate with the experience, accessibility, and leadership capacity required.”

The following demands are outlined in his statement, including: Job creation through agricultural initiatives, enforcement of environmental accountability, implementation of the 13% derivation principle, transparent elections using BVAS and real-time result transmission.

Beyond criticism, the piece offers a roadmap for change. “Revival of refineries… reclamation of degraded environments… development of Warri as an oil and technology hub… empowerment of indigenous businesses.”

Finally, this is said to be the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of leaders and citizens alike: “The people of Warr Federal constituency have endured 27 years of inadequate representation. The time has come to break free from this cycle.” Warri will rise but only when its people stand together, demand better governance, and choose leadership that reflects their collective aspirations.”

This intervention is more than an opinion, it is a political signal flare ahead of 2027, one that could reshape the power dynamics in Warri and beyond.
